A technical glitch in the signalling system disrupted metro operations on Purple Line (Baiyappanahalli-Mysore Road) with trains delayed by about 40 minutes on Monday.
More than 150 passengers had to be evacuated from a train that was stuck between Swami Vivekananda and Baiyyappanahalli metro stations.
A picture showed passengers walking towards theBaiyappanahalli platform on the emergency walkway.
Six-round trips between the Baiyappanahalli and Mysore Road stations were cancelled during this time.
The unavailability of trains at the Kempegowda Metro station led to huge rush with passengers crowding even the stairs. The glitch also forced the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to terminate two trains at Indiranagar and one at SV Road.
“At 10.08 (am), signalling failure occurred at Baiyappanahalli entry point. As a result, trains could not be received or dispatched at the station up to 10.57 (am) till the signalling system was manually reset and restored," Mahendra Jain, BMRCL Managing Director, said in a release.
The BMRCL said three short-loop trains were run from Indiranagar to Mysore Road station via Kempegowda station to clear the rush. The metro officials also refunded Rs 340 on 16 travel tokens.
Officials said the problem occurred in point machine, which guides trains during track-shifting operations (turnouts). The train at Byappanahalli could not move further and consequently affected the operation of other trains.
The managing director said the problem was being investigated thoroughly.
Previously, metro on Purple line was disrupted in October last year and January this year. However, the delays were limited to 15 minutes.
