A labourer, aged about 40, was mowed down by a speeding van near the Mysore Road checkpost on Saturday night.

The man, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, was trying to cross the busy road and was struck by a van coming from the opposite side.

According to police, the van driver lost control of the vehicle soon after and it turned turtle on the road.

Passengers hurt

Three women in the vehicle — identified as Susheelamma, Priyanka and Vijayalakshmi, all residents of Kengeri — were injured in the accident.  The three were returning home after visiting a relative in Bidadi. Police said the van driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the spot.

The labourer, who suffered severe head injuries, was rushed to a nearby private hospital, but died during treatment. He told hospital staff that he was a construction labourer who recently came to the City in search of work, but failed to mention his name. One of the injured women is in critical condition, police said.

Kengeri Traffic Police have registered a case.
