BBMP  officials with the Additional Commissioner of Police, Electronics City evicted 500 street vendors on Wednesday in Hosa Road market near Parappana Agrahara close to Electronics City.

BBMP said that they were clearing the encroachment to widen the road. But the vendors complained that they were evicted without any notice.

The vendors reported to Bengaluru Jilla Beedhi Vyapari Sanghatanegala Okkuta, an association which helps street vendors fight for their rights when faced with forceful eviction.

When asked why were they not given a notice before eviction, Shanta Babu, the area corporator said: "We have been making announcements to them about the road widening project and widening the footpath for more than a month. But they  have not budged from the place. So we had to evict them."

Meanwhile, Lekha, representative of Bengaluru Jilla Beedhi Vyapari Sanghatanegala Okkuta, said that officials are supposed to issue a notice before eviction. "This is an absolute misuse of power and these are the vendors who have been surveyed for the identification numbers for the street vendors," she said.
