Tickling your fancy
Esprit has three lines – ‘The EDC’, exclusively for the college goer; ‘The Collection’, which offers elegant evening wear; and ‘Esprit’s casual’ slot which looks cool with bright colours in red, orange, blue, yellow and white.
Kaustav Dey, marketing manager, Esprit India, while talking about the three slots, says that the EDC is a younger and grungier version of Esprit for the more fashion forward customer. “Animal prints, tribal motifs, feathered accents and unusual colours are meant for those who are truly bohemian at heart,” he explains.
The EDC for women includes narrow cargo trousers and tank top with animal print, paired with casual leather jacket and oversized scarf and hip hybrid sandals. There are also parka, chinos and striped shirt paired with romantic ballerinas and a voluminous square scarf. The hot pants, shorts and mini skirts are fast moving this season.
The EDC for men has stonewashed denim in new cuts and double-layered tees. The shirts come in Indigo wash and trousers in striped and coloured twill material. Crumpled, bleached jeans shorts and batik tees are in. The Collection stocks pieces for day wear in the office or for an evening out. “The dresses are fluid and easy, making them versatile.
Throw in a structured blazer at work and replace it with a statement necklace at night,” says Kaustav and adds, “the shirts and trousers are slim cut, in crisp fabrics for effortless chic.”
For men, there are figure-hugging shirts that are nipped in at the waist with a belt, coupled with rolled up trousers in moderate slim fit. Coloured slim denims are paired with buttonless cardigan or a top.
Esprit’s casual has an international appeal to it. “The denims come in a variety of fits from boyfriend to straight to super skinny. However, we ensure that the lines are always clean, minimalist and comfortable,” he says.
Since each of the three collections has its own distinct style and character, Kaustav feels the wearer can play around with the accessories as long as he or she doesn’t match everything from head to toe. “You could pick up hobo bags, clutches, scarves, belts, watches — mixing and matching without bothering too much about the rules,” he says.
However, Kaustav isn’t generous when he talks about what footwear should go with each of the collection. He points out that for ‘The Collection’, it’s shoes for men, and stilettos for women. In ‘casuals’, men may go in for moccasins, loafers or even sneakers and women can slip into ballet flats and summer sandals. In ‘EDC’, guys can wear chunky, military inspired boots and the women can settle in for shearling or even statement heels.
Umer Sofi, III year engineering, Dr Ambedkar Institute of Technology is sporting a layered graphic T-shirt in hot pink with plaid surfer shorts from EDC for men and matched it with a leather satchel.
Punchline: “I really like the variety. The designs are flattering and highlight the body contours. It fits well and the colours are attractive. The clothes give you a sporty look.”

College picked up a psychedelic print chiffon blouse with lilac blouson shorts from EDC for women.
