The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has commissioned a survey to identify points of leakage in the supply network in South Bangalore and reduce the quantum of unaccounted for water (UFW).
BWSSB Minister Suresh Kumar told reporters here on Tuesday that L&T had been asked to conduct the survey on a pilot basis in Basavanagudi, Chamarajpet, Padmanabhanagar, Jayanagar and BTM Layout and suggest measures to reduce pilferage.
As much as 35 to 40 per cent of piped water supplied by BWSSB is ’unaccounted for water,’ the major reason being drawing of water from public taps, illegal connections and leakage due to faulty piping.
L&T has been given one and half years to complete the survey and submit its report.
The company would survey household connections, quality of existing pipelines and sources of leakage, the minister said.
“Our goal is to reduce the UFW to at least 20 per cent. Based on the success, the project will be replicated in the rest of Bangalore,” the minister said.
Suresh Kumar said Cauvery fourth stage second phase project to provide 500 MLD of additional Cauvery water to Bangalore would become fully operational in two weeks.
Kumar also said that the Union Planning Commission had asked the Chicago University to study the ‘Sakaala’ scheme of Karnataka and submit a report.
Sakaala is a flagship programme of the State government providing time-bound delivery of government services to citizens.
