The High Court has directed M/s Nagashree Home Products, which makes sweets and savouries, to pay Rs 60,000 to a family affected by the pollutants emitted by its factory, besides paying Rs 10,000 each to six petitioners who had moved the court to close down the factory.

A division bench of Chief Justice D H Waghela and Justice Ram Mohan Reddy disposed of the petition on Wednesday after the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) said it had initiated criminal proceedings against the electricity board for not complying with its orders.

Residents of Hiriyur town in Chitradurga district had moved the court, contending that M/s Nagashree Home Products was using rubber tyres as fuel to make food products, thus polluting the environment and imperilling the health of people. The KSPCB had ordered the closure of the factory in December 2012 but the factory complied with the order only in March, 2015.
