A meeting to resolve the deadlock between the State government and the residents of Gorur village in Magadi taluk in Ramanagara district over setting up a waste processing-cum-power generation plant in the village, remained inconclusive on Monday.
Meeting convened
The meeting was convened by Energy Minister D K Shivakumar, who is also the district incharge minister for Ramanagara.
Local residents, seers and elected representatives were invited.
The government’s proposal to set up a waste treatment plant to process garbage from the City on a 45-acre plot n Gorur had met with stiff resistance from the local people.
The protests had even turned violent when officials visited the village to survey land for setting up the unit in October last year.
Speaking to reporters, Shivakumar said the residents had been assured that their village will not be turned into a dumping yard.
The waste would be processed scientifically and all environmental issues would be addressed. Trucks will not dump garbage and a power plant would be set up to generate energy.
Project opposed
However, local MLA H C Balakrishna opposed the project stating that the waste treatment plant would play havoc with the environment.
Seer Basavalingaswamy of Bande Mutt also opposed setting up of the plant. The State government will hold another round of talks with the residents soon, Shivakumar said.
