Udupi: Three students from a Bengaluru college drowned while swimming in Arabian Sea at Charkikadu beach in Kundapura taluk on Sunday.
The deceased students had been identified as Gautham (19), Lokesh (19), and Ashish (18). Another student, Niroop, rescued by local resident Umesh Poojary, is in a critical condition, and is currently undergoing treatment at KMC Hospital, Manipal, police sources added.
A group of ten students from different colleges in Bengaluru arrived in Udupi district two days ago. After visiting popular tourist spots, including Sri Krishna Mutt and Malpe Beach, the group had rented rooms at a lodge in Kumbashi.
On Sunday morning, they walked towards Charkikadu beach using mobile
navigation.
While nine students entered the sea, one of them, Anjan, chose to stay back onshore. Suddenly, the group were caught in strong
currents.
Two students managed to swim to safety, while two others were rescued by their friends. Niroop was pulled out unconscious by Umesh Poojary and rushed to the hospital.
Fire and Emergency Services personnel, Coastal Security Police, and Kundapura Police, along with professional diver Ishwar Malpe and local residents, recovered the bodies and sent them to KMC Hospital, Manipal, for post-mortem.
The students had reportedly booked return train tickets to Bengaluru for Sunday evening after completing their coastal tour. A case was registered at the Kundapura police station.
