This may be the last year for the Plaster of Paris Ganesha idols in Karnataka. Though State Pollution Control Board imposed a ban last month, a few pieces have appeared in the market.

Manufacturers say they are not making new idols and what you see are just left-over pieces from last year.

According to the Pollution Control Board, every year 50,000 PoP idols are displayed in the state during Ganesha festival. These idols made are light weight and popular with the public pandals.

But POP idols do not dissolve easily in water and sometimes bulldozers are required to crush them into smaller pieces. They also come painted with colours which further pollute the lake and imperil aquatic life.

The Pollution Control Board has decided to withdraw licences of manufacturers caught making POP idols. The government has also decided to closely man the check posts at the borders to stop POP idols from being brought in from elsewhere.
