Susheela Sharma, a 60-year-old woman confined to a rehabilitation in Bengaluru, was produced before the High Court of Karnataka on Friday in response to a  habeas corpus petition.

A division bench headed by Justice B S Patil was hearing a petition filed by Narotham Sharma, Susheela's nephew.  Narotham claimed that Susheela, his maternal aunt, had been kidnapped and kept in captivity by her daughter Sunitha Sharma, who is after her property.

On being questioned by the court, Susheela said she was  forcibly admitted to a rehabilitation centre where she was given injections for being mentally ill. She said she aspired to do some developmental and social welfare work but her daughter was after her money and property.  Police informed the court they arrested Sunitha on Thursday while her accomplice, Karim Lal, is still at large.

The bench, after hearing Susheela out, directed the authorities to get her medically examined at Nimhans  and file a report at the next hearing on February 28.  The court also directed the police to provide security to Susheela.
