A platoon of around 30 traffic policemen marched on JC Road on Friday, issuing warnings to commercial establishments found encroaching the footpath.

Additional Commissioner of Police (traffic), M A Saleem said: “These shops make it inconvenient for the public to use the footpath by dumping their material. Pedestrians are compelled to walk on the road risking their lives.”

However, the police action was limited only to issuing warning. Saleem said the traffic police will recommend the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike to cancel trade licences if business establishments continue to encroach the footpath.

The BBMP officers said they have been carrying out an anti-encroachment drive to clear footpaths on JC Road, but complained that vendors and the commercial establishments frequently reoccupy the footpath after the completion of the drive.

They said they would soon launch a drive against such encroachment with the help of traffic police.
