A traffic police head constable has been suspended for assaulting a senior citizen over a petty issue in Vijayanagar on Sunday.

Based on a complaint, DCP (Traffic-West) Shobha Rani suspended head constable Jayaram of Vijayanagar station and ordered a departmental enquiry. Jayaram is accused of assaulting Ramakrishna (65), a resident of Nagarabhavi, with his helmet over a petty issue.

The incident occurred around 1.30 pm near Vijayanagar water tank. Jayaram was riding his bike to the police station, while Ramakrishna was following the bike in his car to go to Vijayanagar market.

“Jayaram stopped the bike at the junction as the red light was on, while Ramakrishna honked four times,” said a senior police officer. Jayaram directed Ramakrishna to wait till the signal was clear. But Ramakrishna directed Jayaram to move away as he wanted to take a right turn, but Jayaram insisted Ramakrishna has to wait.

“Ramakrishna lost his cool, got off the car and picked an argument with Jayaram. The situation worsened as Jayaram too lost his cool. In a fit of anger, he hit Ramakrishna with his helmet. Ramakrishna fell and sustained head injuries,” added the officer.

He was taken to a nearby hospital. Some road users staged a flash protest, seeking action against Jayaram for assaulting a senior citizen. The DCP reached the spot and pacified the protesters. The protest was withdrawn following an assurance that action would be taken against Jayaram.
