An assistant sub-inspector attached to Jayanagar traffic police was suspended on Tuesday on charges of dereliction of duty.

The action came after a sting operation exposed Venkateshappa, the ASI.
Venkateshappa was in-charge of towing vehicles in the Jayanagar area. Though he took the penalty amount from the owners of vehicles, he would not give them receipts for the money collected, said the police.

A few vehicle owners, who were fed up of his acts, decided to conduct a sting operation. A vehicle owner wore a hidden camera when Venakateshappa collected penalty money from him on Sunday afternoon. Like always he did not give the vehicle owner a receipt. All of this was captured on camera, said the police.

Later, the residents approached senior officers, lodged a complaint and submitted the recorded footage. The policeman was suspended after verifying the footage.

A departmental inquiry has been ordered against the ASI. He has been working at the Jayanagar traffic police station for the last two years, said the officer.
