Traffic signals will be recalibrated to provide more time for pedestrians to cross main roads and junctions, Home Minister K J George said on Friday.

Addressing a press conference in Bengaluru, George said there were complaints that the time provided for pedestrians to cross the zebra crossings at major traffic junctions was too short and insufficient.

The minister was replying to queries from reporters on the steps the government planned to take to prevent the recurrence of incidents such as the one in Bengaluru on Thursday, when a rashly driven tanker ran over pedestrians crossing the Airport Road near Kempapura junction, killing two people on the spot.

Pedestrians were given only 10 to 15 seconds to cross even wide and busy roads, it was pointed out. The minister said the police department was in touch with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike officials regarding construction of skywalks across busy roads and junctions in the City.
