Training youth for local self-governanceThere is a lot that students can contribute to urban society

He was addressing students from the All India Institute of Local Self-Government (AIILSG), Bangalore Centre, on the occasion of Local Self-Government Day celebrations.

Calling upon the students to get training in urban planning and governing, he said: “There is a lot that you (students) can contribute to the urban society which is only getting complex by the day.”

Elaborating several challenges faced by the governing authorities, he said at least 30 per cent of the country’s population and about 40 per cent of the State population live in the urban areas.

He said the need of the hour for such authorities is trained, professional employees, the lack of which has hampered implementations of several schemes in the country.

He said infrastructure is another problem to be dealt with in all the cities of the country, including metros like Bangalore. “This shows that there is only growth and no real development in the nation,” he said, adding that this needs to change and only the youth should the responsibility.
