An undertrial allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself with a wire from the ceiling inside his cell at the Bangalore Central Prisons at Parappana Agrahara on Sunday night.

The victim, identified as Vinod, 27, of Mico Bande in Adugodi in the City, was lodged in the cell in the fourth barrack behind the kitchen.

He is said to have picked the wire that was lying near the kitchen and hanged himself with it. He was allegedly involved in two cases of attempt to commit dacoity and assembling for purpose of committing dacoity in Adugodi police limits. He was sent to the Central Prison on May 21.

A waste picker, Vinod was an alcoholic. He had attempted to end his life twice at his house, first by stabbing himself and then by consuming poison.

However, he was rescued by neighbours and friends, said the police. Vinod hanged himself inside his cell at 6.45 pm on Sunday. A few undertrials noticed it and informed the prison authorities who rushed him to the hospital at the prison.

Later, he was taken to Victoria Hospital for further treatment where he was declared brought dead, said the police.
