Unorganised sector to be May Day focus

Trade unions across the City would dedicate the May Day this year to the unorganised sector and highlight their problems during the day-long programmes.

G R Shivashankar of the Trade Union Coordination Centre on Monday said most of the employers do not give facilities to their employees, while they extract more work than the workers’ potential.

Citing examples of a few prominent food joints in the City, Shivashankar said the workers in these hotels are not entitled for ESI, Provident Fund, gratuity and other benefits, because they have not been enrolled as employees by the employers.

“Today, the condition of workers is grim. The labour department should see to it that each worker gets a minimum of Rs 10,000 a month in the wake of high inflation,” he said.

On the morning of May 1, a rally will be taken out from Minerva Circle to Bannappa Park.
