Litterateur U R Ananthmurthy has asked people to question and criticise the current definition of development as propagated by the likes of Congress and Narendra Modi and also challenge the concept of 'Arhata' (merit) in the context of promoting equality in the present age.

Delivering the Foundation Day address at IIMB (Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore) on Saturday, Ananthmurthy, said: “Earlier people believed that religion will settle all their questions. Similarly today people have such a faith in science and technology that it will correct everything. As if it is an answer to all problems.”

There is therefore the need to question development as well as science and technology of the present age in order to develop new thought. Referring to the controversy over merit in top institutions of the country, the Jnanapith awardee asked the students of IIMB to redefine the entire concept of intelligence.
