After three months of ‘successful’ ban on the entry and movement of vehicles inside Cubbon Park, one of the major lung spaces in the City, on every Sunday, the Bengaluru traffic police are contemplating a similar ban on second Saturdays starting November 14.

“All the roads around Cubbon Park see fewer vehicles on second Saturday as it is a holiday for government employees. Banning entry of vehicles on this day may not burden roads outside the park. Which is why, we will ban vehicular movement on November 14 on an experimental basis. If it is successful, we will ban movement of vehicles on all second Saturdays,” M A Saleem, Additional Commissioner (Traffic), told Deccan Herald on Sunday.

Even with the ban on entry of vehicles inside Cubbon Park, the vehicular movement outside the park usually is not heavy. The number of vehicles increases outside the park towards evening, however, it is not manageable, he noted.

Unlike other days, Cubbon Park was enveloped in a peaceful and quiet ambience on Sunday, free from the noise of vehicular movement.

As walkers fearlessly used the roads for a brisk walk, the rent-free bicycles were full in demand. Organic vegetables and fruits too were on sale.

“Today’s atmosphere here in the park reminds me of old Bengaluru. I am happy that the vehicles are not allowed inside park. Children can run around freely now,” Rini Mane, who came with her daughter for a walk, said. While, Girish from Kodihalli said the park remained in its true sense, which otherwise is full of noise of vehicles.

Also, rent-free bicycles provided by Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) near Bandstand in the park attracted many.

The representative said as many as 346 persons who used the bicycle on Sunday while it was 307, last Sunday. Many who wanted to ride, including Coeura De Toi and her friend Sese Seko, both Africans, did not get a ride for themselves later in the evening, due to shortage of bicycles.
