Residents of Pandarahalli in Chitradurga taluk have promised the Department of Women and Child Development officials that they will not resort to the ritual of parading children naked to “appease the rain god.”

The video of a boy being paraded naked as part of the ritual had gone viral recently.
After learning about the incident, the department officials visited the village early this week. They spoke with the villagers and educated them about the child rights.

The villagers were told that such acts were tantamount to violation of child rights and attract punishment under the law.

Initially, the residents justified the act saying that there were no rains in the village and hence they had performed the ritual according to their tradition to appease the rain god. However, they were convinced of the illegality of their act.

Finally, the villagers promised not to practise the ritual henceforth.
