Even as the Bharat bandh paralysed the city on Monday, a few volunteers took out their personal vehicles to drop passengers stranded in the Kempegowda bus stand and railway station to their destinations.

Anil Kumar and Prabhavathy engaged their personal car to ferry passengers in medical emergency, besides helping senior citizens and persons with disability stuck in the city railway station.

Kumar, a professional driver, completed 10 trips with Prabhavathy, who identified patients in the station and brought them to the car.

“We took a pregnant woman to hospital in the morning and dropped a senior citizen who arrived from Hindupur with a medical emergency at Jayadeva Hospital,” Kumar said. “We have been doing this service for the past two years and are very happy to help the needy.”

Cab driver Omkar Murthy also dropped senior citizens and persons with disability free of cost to Electronics City and Sarjapur and to hospitals in his SUV.

“I did this as an auto driver for the past five years. Now, I’m doing it with my car,” Murthy said.

Food distributed for free

Three friends from Kumaraswamy Layout — Srinath Gupta, Ashok and Nag Mahesh — prepared chitranna (lemon rice) and distributed 400 packets to passengers stranded at the Majestic bus stand in the afternoon.

“We are doing this for the third time. We use 25 kg rice to prepare chitranna,” Gupta said. Skaters and siblings from Oxford School, Basaveshwara Nagar, Nanditha and Jiswanth distributed biscuits to passengers in Majestic. They zoomed around with their skates on.

A student of class 11, Nanditha played skating hockey at the national level twice and won a silver medal in Puducherry recently. “We are doing this service for the past two years with our father Prakash. Last year, we distributed juice along with biscuits,” she said.
