The strike by students of Vishveshwaraya Technological University (VTU) and its affiliated colleges entered the second day on Thursday and the protest demanding more relaxation in the carry-over system continued overnight.

“We won’t stop the protest until the authorities turn up. It’s for the benefit of nearly 50,000 students. At least one-time examination, supplementary or further relaxation in the promotion norms would make a big difference for thousands of students,” a student from East West College of Engineering told DH on condition of anonymity.

The VTU had relaxed the norms for the final year admission recently. The students are still demanding more relaxation, another last chance, from the authorities as the earlier decision benefited only 5,000 students.

According to the old system, the students were eligible for admission to final year only if they clear all the subjects in the first and second year.

In the recently passed resolution, the VTU relaxed the norms and allowed the engineering students to carry over four subjects from the second year and still get the admission for the final year.

The students also added: “There are no promotion norms in country’s top institution like IIM, IIT and IISC, then why is VTU sticking to this?”
