The warden, who forcibly shaved the head of two students at the St Joseph’s Indian High School, Vittal Mallaya Road, was arrested by the Cubbon Park police on Monday.

“We have registered a case against Kiran, the hostel warden, under section 23 of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and arrested  him,” DCP (Central) Sandeep Patil said. The jurisdictional magistrate court remanded Kiran in judicial custody. The charge on which Kiran has been booked is bailable.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Kiran forcibly tonsured Francis Sebastian, a class 10 student, and his younger brother Charles Sebastian, a class 9 student, on the grounds that their heads were “infested with lice.”

Police are also interrogating him to find out if he shaved the head of 10 other students similarly, a source said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) has served a show-cause notice on the school, said Kimmane Ratnakar, the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education.

“A departmental inquiry will be initiated and action taken once the school responds to the notice,” he said on the sidelines of an event on Monday. Deccan Herald’s attempts to contact the school’s rector, Anil D’Mello, didn’t fructify.
