Warli paintings seem to be the toast of the season at this year’s edition of Chitra Santhe, on Sunday.
The art form is not restricted to the prints on fabrics. It has now conquered the space on walls and calendars too.
A mobile stall near Gandhi Bhavan caught the attention of art enthusiasts. Small wall hangings that go well with any paint and are lightweight and simple are among the many items on offer.
Priced at an affordable Rs 100, the wall hangings were the favourite pick for those looking for a souvenir. Simple jute background in shades of white and cream and Warli designs were the major eyecatchers. Suresh from the Srujana Centre for Innovation, who was at the stall on Sunday, said that they sold commodities worth Rs 50,000.
The Warli art form has also made it to most dresses in the markets of Bengaluru. While a few of them find it best to retain the art in its pristine form, a few others choose to add colours. In its original form, artists at the Santhe explained, it would be white or black designs on a mud red background.
Anupama Vasudev has given a new twist to this traditional art that has been propagated by the tribes from Maharashtra and Gujarat, by adding glitter and other decorative material such as pieces of glass to enhance the art. While the authentic Warli art would represent typical scenes from rural India, Vasudev has given her art works a contemporary spin.
