Water flows out of Subramanyapura lake after its waste weir was damaged on Thursday night.

Miscreants on Thursday night damaged the waste weir of the Subramanyapura lake, draining out all its water.

Residents living around the lake said the weir was damaged between 9 pm and 10 pm. As a result, the water in the lake gushed out through the stormwater drain, with a huge amount of froth. Eyewitnesses said that this was the third time that the waste weir was damaged. The BBMP had repaired the weir a year ago when it was destroyed using an earthmover.

Upon learning about the incident, BBMP chief engineer (lakes) B V Sathish sent an officer for a spot inspection. He said a complaint would be lodged with the police.

Subramanyapura lake has been encroached upon with a slum comprising around 350 houses coming up there.

Some have even built their shanties inside the tank. It is suspected that during the recent spell of rain, water entered into their houses, compelling them to destroy the waste weir. Moreover, the lake is being polluted due to discharge of untreated sewage from the nearby apartments. The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board chairperson Lakshman had conducted a meeting with the polluters on Wednesday.
