A 50-year-old woman was washed away in an overflowing drain at Shivapura in Peenya on Thursday night.

The deceased Thimmamma, a garment factory worker, was a native of T Mallenahalli in Nagamangala taluk, Mandya district. She had parted ways with her husband and was staying alone at Shivapura, said the police.

The incident occurred when Thimmamma was walking on a makeshift wooden bridge across the drain which was overflowing due to heavy rain. The bridge suddenly gave in and she fell into the drain, the police said. Thimmamma would often use the bridge as it was a shortcut to reach her house.

The local police and a few expert swimmers retrieved the body, added the police.
