The contract workers submitted a memorandum at the Labour Commissioner’s office demanding implementation of labour laws with regard to minimum wages, health and provident fund facilities.

K Umesh of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions said that many of the companies refused to regularise these workers even though they had been working in the companies for many years. Companies hesitated to regularise them as they would have to be provided with benefits. Some of the companies did not even pay the minimum wage of Rs 190 per day for unskilled workers, and instead paid them anything from Rs 120 to Rs 150.

There are more than 20,000 contract workers in the City working at various central public service units.
