The water-level in Bhadra river, the backbone of the region, has dropped to the minimum-level. The situation is no different with its subsidiaries like Somavathi and Guggarahalla.
During this period in the previous year, Kalasa, Kalakodu and Balehole areas had received 5-10 mm rains. Marasanige, Hirebailu and Samse villages have not received a single rain so far. Tender areca have started falling due to the increased temperature. Some growers are putting great efforts to irrigate their crops, while those without such facilities are just witnessing the drying plantations of areca and coffee.
Usually, the region gets 25-50 mm rain by March. In 2008 and 2009, the proportion of rain was not less than 100 mm by March. But the absence of rain this time has worried the locals a lot. The temperature is 35-36 degree celsius in the very heart of Malnad. On the other hand, the aggravating power crisis has resulted in difficulties in irrigation.
