As many as 77 women were felicitated on the occasion for their contribution in bringing up their children and keeping their family united in the absence of their husbands. Most of them were married at an early age, some as young as 14, and also widowed very soon. The gathering saluted their courage in fighting through life during adverse circumstances.
There was also one man, Noel Francis Veigas, who was a widower and brought up his two children single-handedly, who was felicitated on the occasion.
President of CASK Justice Michael Saldanha and Vice President Lily Pereira handed over the mementos to the 78 invitees. Gladys D’Souza (90) was the oldest of all. Dr Derik Lobo who raised the toast on the occasion said that the programme is a celebration and appreciation of the individual and combined worth of these people to the community. Dr Janet Pinto, whose book ‘Indian Women- From Victims to Victors’ was presented to all the victors, in her address said that widowhood is not the end of anything and urged them to rise against adversities.
Bishop of Mangalore Rev Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza blessed the function. Secreatry Neil D’Souza and others were present.
