Education Minister Kimmane Rathnakara said, the number of dishonest persons was increasing in proportion to the increase in literacy rate.

He was speaking during the inaugural function of the centenary celebrations of K V Shankaragowda, who was once the education minister of the State. He recalled that Shankaragowda, who is deemed to be the architect of ‘modern Mandya’ for having establishing various educational institutions, was described as ‘Nityasachiva’ (minister forever) by Jnanpith laurate Kuvempu.

The function had been organised by the Karnataka Sangha, here, on Tuesday.
Elaborating on the deterioration of moral values in the society, despite education becoming widespread, Rathnakara said, a person cannot be gauged by either his successes or failures.

“Children have to be exposed to personalities who strived for the overall development of the people and the society. So, steps will be taken to buy books on Shankaragowda for all school libraries,” he said.

President of Karnataka Sangha Jayaprakashgowda said, the house where Shankaragowda resided would be converted into a museum. “We have plans to establish a theatre on the lines of Rangashankara, for which we need the support of the State government,” he said. Shankaragowda’s wife Susheelamma was felicitated during the occasion.
