Collection of antique lamps, a hobby that was cultivated 20 years back by a resident, is illuminating a portion of Kalamandir, attracting visitors of Natakotsava.
Over 80 lamps exhibited by M S Padmanabha (65), a hobbyist showcases a collection of lamps from America, Austria, Germany, France, and different parts of India, all of which are more than a century old.
Padmanabha says that he was inspired to collect antique lamps in the year 1993, after he accidentally broke a lamp as he was trying to light it.
Lamps collected between the periods 1913 and 1983 are in good condition even to this day, requiring minor repairs. All the lamps that he proudly exhibits have been collected in Mysore and Tumkur. He says that he has literally “hounded thousands of people” to put together his collection.
The lamps that have been kept in a room alloted by Ranga Samaja will be on display till October 14.
Ditmar Vienna, a lamp from France that consumes 60ml of kerosene per hour; British make W Thompson; Feuerhand Atom of German having 2.5 watt candle power; Dietz of USA with 400ml tank capacity are the major attractions in the exhibition.
Padmanabha, who is going through difficult times after the demise of his wife and second daughter, said that nothing could deter him from collecting the lamps.
His desire for the lamps will remain unabated, he added. However the present day poor economy is making it difficult to sustain his passion, especially with two unmarried middle aged daughters.
