Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda on Tuesday described cross voting by the BJP MLAs in the Legislative Council elections held on Monday as a degradation of moral standards.

Speaking to reporters, he said it was not possible to identify those who have cross-voted by violating the party whip. Hence, no action can be taken in this regard. “It may sound ridiculous to say at this juncture that such MLAs should introspect, but I firmly believe that people will teach them a lesson,” he said.

On the matter of delays in appointing the Karnataka Lokayukta, the Chief Minister said that the government has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking clarification on the appointment process. The government will initiate the process to appoint the new Lokayukta after receiving clarification from the apex court, he added.

Asked about the Cabinet expansion, he said he would initiate the process after results for the Legislative Council elections for teachers’ and graduates’ constituencies are announced on Wednesday. “The process will be completed in eight days,” he said.

He also said he has presented a Rs 1 lakh crore budget for 2012-13 fiscal. “We need ministers who are capable of implementing the budgetary programmes speedily. Hence, Cabinet reshuffle will be necessary,” he added.
