It marks the beginning of a new Hindu lunar calendar with a change in the moon’s orbit. Ugadi is celebrated with festive fervour. People in Chikmagalur were seen in festive mood and have been making all preparations for Ugadi from Monday itself. Women were seen purchasing neem, mango leaves, coconut, banana, flowers, fruits on Hanumantha Circle and I G Road.

Inspite of the heat, women along with children were seen purchasing pooja items and trying to bargain with the vendors. The textile and grocery shops were doing brisk business. The traffic was thrown out of gear owing to the density of population in many of the roads.

“Compared to last year, women who have come to purchase various items for Yugadi is less. This may be due to increase in the price. However, it has not affected our business,” said a businessmen on Hanumantha Circle. As part of Yugadi, temples are holding special pooja, homa and havana.
