Two member bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and S B Chauhan refused to admit the public interest litigations filed by Andhra Pradesh Official Language Commission and one Deepak Thimaiah seeking the intervention of the apex court in this issue.

The PIL sought the apex court intervention saying that as the issue involved languages of both the states, it should be heard by the Supreme Court instead of lower court. However, the apex court refused to admit the petition saying that as the matter was pending before the Madras High Court it is not fair to interfere.

The Madras High Court has been hearing a petition questioning the decision of the Union Government appointed expert committee to grant classical status to Kannada and Telugu.

The Centre had earlier appointed an expert committee to study whether these two languages deserved classical status. The committee in its report recommended granting classical tag to both the languages.
