Speaking on the sidelines of a two-day Indo-US symposium on methodology of research in ISM here recently, Handa said as of now the AYUSH centres were following the registry monitored by the Indian Council of Medical Research.
He said a proposal has also been made to overcome the shortage of manpower in AYUSH’s Central labs in each state. “We had already given Rs 1.5 crore for setting up lab infrastructure in every state,” he said.
Not recognised
Earlier addressing a gathering Prof Handa said while Indian Systems of Medicine (ISM) have drugs for various illnesses, they are not widely recognised.
The industry is also shying away from making major investment as there is no protection of data generated in research and development, in comparison to intellectual property rights in allopathic medicine manufacture, he noted.
Incidentally, the Pharmacopoeia Commission, which has a Central lab in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh is a newly-constituted body formed this year.
Its main objective is to lay quality parameters for ISM and oversee Ayurveda, Unani and Sidda pharmacopoeia committees.
