Congress and BJP workers clashed at the ground breaking ceremony of a Malaprabha river water project, here in Belagavi district, on Sunday morning.  

The project envisages to divert the Malaprabha river water to Hirebagevadi, Siddanabavi, Bedageri and Muthnala village tanks.  

BJP workers who are supporters of the local BJP MLA Sanjay Patil and Congress workers who are supporters of KPCC Mahila unit president Lakshmi Hebbalakara clashed at the function.

Some irate workers even came to blows and the situation turned tense for a while.The skirmish occurred when both party functionaries demanded that the benefits of the project should go to them.  

While the BJP workers chanted "Modi...Modi.."; the Congress workers chanted "Akka....Akka...."  

The whole scene was enacted in front of the MLA and the lady Congress chief only. District in-charge Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi tried to placate the angry party workers.

MLAs Suresh Angadi and Sanjay Patil and MLC Mahantesh Kavatigamata were present there.    

Later the programme organised by the water resource department continued after Jarkiholi and the MLAs struggled to restore normalcy.
