Vokkaliga leaders of the Congress party have decided to demand that the high command set aside at least 70 tickets for the Vokkaliga community candidates to contest the upcoming Assembly elections.

On Wednesday, Vokkaliga sitting MLAs, former legislators and around 300 aspirants met under the leadership of MLA D K Shivakumar and passed a resolution to seek maximum representation.

The Vokkaliga leaders contend that during the 2008 Assembly elections, of the 34 seats given to the community candidates, 21 emerged victorious (65 per cent). Shivakumar has said the party should given credence to the “winning capacity” of the community leaders and accommodate them adequately.

The leaders have also decided to appeal to the party to give former union minister S M Krishna “suitable responsibility” to lead the party in the State during the elections.
