The twins, with one body, two heads, three legs, four hands, one heart and one stomach, were born to Jareena, a daily-wage worker from Najarabad.
Born after 30 weeks, the twins were delivered through a caesarean section and weigh three kilos. The condition of the mother and her babies is said to be fine. The twins are conjoined from their chest to lower abdomen.
Paediatric surgeon at the hospital, Dr T A Eshwarappa, expressed his surprise saying that this was the first time he had seen conjoined twins in his 24 year career.
This is the mother’s fourth pregnancy, and the first three pregnancies were normal. The doctors have asked the parents to take the newborn to Sparsh Hospital in Bangalore.
“Siamese or conjoined twins are born due to congenital anomalies. Since the babies are likely to develop erogenital infection, it will be difficult to save both the twins,” Dr Eshwarappa said.
Doctors say going by the anatomical structure of the twins, it will be difficult to separate them and save both lives. “After discussions with experts in the field, we can attempt to save at least one twin,” Dr Eshwarappa said.
