Council bypoll: CM Ibrahim gets Cong ticket

Last Updated IST

The Congress high command on Friday announced former Union Minister C M Ibrahim as the party’s candidate to contest the Karnataka Legislative Council byelection scheduled for August 31.

The seat fell vacant following the death of BJP’s Vimala Gowda in April.

Her tenure was to end June 2018.

Ibrahim is known to be a loyal Siddaramaiah supporter — they go back to their days in the Janata Parivar.

Ibrahim’s candidature for the vacant MLC seat could mark his return to state politics since his 2013 defeat in the Bhadravathi constituency.

Ibrahim was appointed deputy chairman of the state planning board after Siddaramaiah was unsuccessful in getting him into the Rajya Sabha or the Legislative Council.
