Residents of Mehboob Nagar here approached the police on Tuesday, seeking protection against some miscreants, who allegedly assaulted three persons — including a councillor’s brother — on Monday over “election rivalry”.

The residents submitted a memorandum to assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Abhinav Khare in this regard and complained that the miscreants, claiming to be supporters of an ex-councillor, first assaulted one Gaffer Sharif.

Sharif was on his way to a hospital as he was feeling unwell, when the miscreants allegedly asked him, who he had voted for in the recently concluded elections, assaulted him and then fled. Onlookers hospitalised Sharif.

After learning about the incident, Ayub, new councillor from the ward Abdul Khayum’s brother, and his friend Zameer paid a visit to enquire about Sharif’s condition.
The duo was assaulted on the hospital premises by three persons, who came in an autorickshaw. The miscreants have also allegedly issued a life threat.

The residents have complained that the miscreants, claiming to be supporters of ex-councillor Babulal, have been harassing people for allegedly not voting for Babulal. They alleged that the miscreants were stopping water supply to houses by regulating the main valves, throwing stones at pedestrians and abusing women.

They have sought police protection for Mehboob Nagar and Tippu Nagar at least till the Assembly elections are conducted.

The ASP assured that he would take steps to ensure the arrest of the miscreants.
