Demanding sites for poor, Niveshana Rahithara Horata Samithi members under the aegis of CPI laid a siege to the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Wednesday.

A jatha had commenced from Kalasa Kaimara under the leadership of Lakshmanachar on February 22. The jatha reached Chikmagalur on Wednesday.

The protesters took out a procession on M G Road before reaching the DC’s office. When the protesters tried to enter inside the DC’s office, police prevented them and closed the office door.

The protesters sat on a dharna in front of the DC’s office. They shouted slogans demanding sites for poor.

Mudigere taluk CPI Secretary Gopal N Shetty said “we will not leave the place, unless the district administration promises on sites for poor.”

CPI Leader Radha Sunadresh said “the CPI has been demanding sites for poor for the last one and half years. The government has come forward to identify land for the poor.”

Vijaykumar said “the DC has earmarked 48 acre land in Chikmagalur taluk. However, the panchayat development officers are not keen on distributing sites for poor who do not have a roof over their head.”
