Mangaluru: The foundation stone for the development works at Surathkal and Mulki railway stations, which fall under the jurisdiction of the Konkan Railway Corporation, will be laid on January 30 by Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta.
As part of the development works, Surathkal railway station will undergo platform surface improvements at a cost of Rs 47.52 lakh and the construction of a platform roof at a cost of Rs 1.02 crore. Similarly, Mulki railway station, a crucial junction under Kilpadi Gram Panchayat, will see platform surface improvements at a cost of Rs 38.58 lakh and platform roof construction at a cost of Rs 1.04 crore.
For several years, local residents have been demanding the development of platforms and improved infrastructure at the Surathkal and Mulki railway stations. Due to the lack of necessary facilities, passengers, especially locals, have faced numerous difficulties.
When this issue was brought to MP Capt Chowta’s attention, he promptly engaged with railway officials and the Railway Ministry. Taking special interest in the matter, he consistently followed up on the requests, and his efforts have now successfully fulfilled the long-standing demands of the local railway commuters, said DK MP.
Surathkal, which houses several educational institutions and industries, provides employment to thousands of workers. Additionally, many locals travel between Mumbai and Surathkal, making railway services an essential mode of transport. The Surathkal railway station is also widely used by tourists visiting Mangaluru, said Capt Chowta.
Mangalore City North MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty, Moodbidri MLA Umanath Kotian, and officials from the Konkan Railway Corporation will take part in the foundation laying ceremony.
