DC asks Agri department to supply fertiliser on timeConduct regular meetings of farmers and organisations

Chairing a meeting on the bottlenecks in supplying fertiliser and sowing seed at the Fort Old Vidhana Sabhangana here on Saturday, he said the meeting should be conducted once in at least three months. He also advised him to take sufficient precautions to avert any kind of problems in fertiliser supply in the days to come.

Joint Director of Agriculture K R Krishnaiah said the district has a total of 1,56,816 hectare agricultural land, that includes plantation crops like coffee, chilli, cardamom, paddy and jowar. The fertiliser supply is arranged on the basis of the total land area of the crops and the availability of the fertiliser. A proposal has been submitted to the Commissioner of Agriculture demanding 68,770 metric tonne fertiliser for the 2009 monsoon. On the basis of the said parameters, the Commissioner has earmarked 57,192 metric tonne fertiliser for Kodagu district, he explained.

Only 53,249 MT fertiliser had been earmarked last year. About 3,943 MT fertiliser is being given additionally this year, he said.

ZP in-charge president S N Rajarao said even the farmers without RTC should be able to avail fertilisers. He suggested that precautions should be taken to see that the people with fake identities should not get fertilisers who later sell them in black market.

Agriculture and Industry Standing Committee Chairman M K Nanjappa appealed the Marketing Federation and fertiliser supply companies to supply sufficient fertilisers to the farmers with the assistance of VSSN and DCC bank.

He also suggested the agriculture co-operative societies to test the fertilisers before supplying them to the farmers.

District Central Cooperative Bank Managing Director Divakar said many societies have already availed the DCC bank’s facility to provide guarantee amount to the Agriculture Credit Co-operative Societies while purchasing fertilisers, and the bank is still ready to provide interest-free loan to those who require it.
