Readers have responded generously to the Deccan Herald-Prajavani Relief Fund Trust’s initiative to provide assistance to poor and meritorious students who have passed SSLC.

A sum of Rs 11 lakh has been distributed among 220 poor and deserving students from across the State. The initiative was started to encourage students who have scored well in their SSLC exams.

This year, several reader-donors had contributed Rs 14.32 lakh to the fund. While Rs 11 lakh has been distributed to students, the remaining amount has been kept as a fixed deposit and would be used for the same purpose next year.

As many as 750 students had applied for assistance and, of them 220 were granted a scholarship of Rs 5,000 each. Of these students, 96 are boys and 124 girls.

From Rs 500 to Rs one lakh, donors have contributed in cash and through cheques. Some of them preferred to remain anonymous.

While thanking all those who have supported the cause, we request others, too, to contribute generously to the fund. On behalf of the readers who contributed to the fund, we extend our hearty congratulations and good wishes to the
students who received the scholarships.
