'Decline in farm research worrisome'

At the Foundation Day celebrations of the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) here on Saturday, Singh said that three per cent of the budget allocation was made towards agriculture in 2006-07, but that declined to 2.4 per cent in 2009-10 budget.

Agricultural research has also taken a backseat and this was worrisome in the face of challenges presented to maintain food security, he opined.

Vice Chancellor of UAS, Dr P G Chengappa said that UAS stood third in the country for agricultural studies and the money allocated for the university would be used to develop infrastructure.

Several people were feted for excellence in research in their given fields. The awardees are: Dr M Shivashankar, Dr M P Rajanna, Dr Y N Shivalingaiah, Hema Ananth, G Rudregowda, Samuel Sukumar, Dasappa Ramaiah and Lakshman.
