Dejected over a family dispute, a woman attempted to commit suicide after feeding her 11-month-old daughter with poison, in Hangarapura village, Kirugavalu hobli, Malavalli taluk, on Sunday.

It is alleged that the woman, Ranjeetha, had laced the food with pesticide and fed her baby. Later, she is said to have tried to consume pesticide, when fortunately she received guests, who prevented her, saving her life.

The child Impana was rushed to the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) and was provided treatment. She is said to be out of danger.

Background

Ranjeetha, a resident Chikkalkuni village, was married to Nanjunda of Hangarapura, two years ago.

But it is said that there was no compatibility between the couple, which led to several problems.

Nanjunda, a tempo driver, had gone to work when the incident occurred. Nanjunda’s brother Nanjundaswamy told Deccan Herald that he used to buy idlis to Impana every day and had given idlis on the fateful day too.

The incident is said to have occurred within a few minutes after he left. The child was immediately taken to Malavalli Taluk Government Hospital and later shifted to Mandya, he added.

Kirugavalu police have gathered information on the incident. However, no case had been registered till evening.
