AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka, Digvijaya Singh, on Saturday dismissed as irrelevant the growing demand by dalit organisations to make State Congress president G Parameshwara the chief minister of the State.

“It (the demand) is irrelevant. The Congress high command will take an appropriate decision at an appropriate time,” he told reporters who sought his comments on the demand for a dalit chief minister. He was speaking on the sidelines of a function organised by KPCC.

Speaking to reporters after inaugurating a wine festival, Parameshwara said he had all the eligibility to become the chief minister and defended dalit organisations that have been demanding that he should be made the chief minister. There is nothing wrong with a community expressing its wish. It is not proper to criticise the community leaders for raising their demand, he said.

He termed as meaningless accusations that he was instigating the dalit organisations. Parameshwara refused to react to reported statements by some Cabinet ministers that dalits will have to wait till the next Assembly elections to see one of their leaders become the chief minister.
