'Distance education is education of future'

Delivering a talk on ‘Distance education courses - Its importance and relevance’ organised by the University Industry Interaction Centre (UIIC) of the Yenepoya University at the University campus in Deralakatte near here on Thursday, Bari said that the World Bank expects education growth in India to be 50 per cent by 2020. Quoting National Knowledge Commission report, Bari said that India, which has only 440 universities at present, needs atleast 1,600 universities to achieve the goal. “Here Distance Education becomes indispensable as its reach is enormous,” he opined.

Further, quoting Yashpal Committee report, Bari said that the gross enrolment for higher education, which is only 11 per cent at present, should reach 15 per cent in the 11th five year plan and 20 per cent by the beginning of 12th five year plan. He said that the distant education is the education of the future. “It is a lifelong learning concept which takes education to the doorsteps of the needy synergising the conventional education with non-conventional education,” he added.

Yenepoya University Vice Chancellor Prof Syed Akheel Ahmed presided. Registrar Ravi Vaswani, Secretary Dr Akhter Hussein and UIIC Deputy Director Dr S Manjula were present.
