Districts with best hygiene habits to be awarded

The award, which carries cash price ranging from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 3 lakh at different levels, has been instituted to encourage panchayats to implement the Centre-sponsored Total Sanitation Campaign.

Announcing the institution of the award on Friday, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said the State has set a target to make the State free from open defecation by 2013.

Total sanitation status
Managing Director of Karnataka Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency Bore Gowda said: “Shimoga and Dakshina Kannada are the only districts that have achieved total sanitation status.” He added that only 39 per cent of the people in the State had access to individual toilets.
