Teaching music in varsities and colleges should not be restricted to imparting only theoretical values of art, but also prepare able musicians who can individually hold concerts, said music scholar Ra Satyanarayana here on Wednesday.

Addressing the gathering during the inauguration of two day International Symposium on ‘Music and Performing Arts in Higher Education,’ at Dr Gangubai Hangal University of Music and Performing Arts, he also said that unlike previous eras, the present day trend demanded budding artistes to be well versed with all aspects of music.

Until a few years ago, a student had just one teacher, while the coaching restricted the students into only rendering concerts. But the changing times has made it important for students to be knowledgable in all concepts of music.
